Security Walkthrough
Take 10 minutes and walk around your house. Look at where an uninvited guest could make their way into your home. Make a note of any potential hazards and ensure they are addressed. Check your smoke detectors! Personally safety is a choice. Please be an active participant in your family's future!
Checklist
- Doors
- Doors have 180 degree peephole.
- Inside locks are at least 1 meter from glass.
- Exterior doors are solid-core.
- Exterior doors have 2.5 cm deadbolt.
- Exterior door hinge pins are non-removable.
- Door jambs are securely fastened.
- Strike plates are secured to door jambs with 6.35 cm screws.
- Dowels inserted in sliding glass doors to prevent them being lifted off the track.
- Windows
- Double hung windows are securely pinned.
- Metal windows and basement windows have auxiliary locks and break resistant panes or security bars or decorative grills.
- Curtains cover windows completely.
- Window air conditioners are secured from inside.
- Security decals placed on windows.
- Garage
- Garage door closes tightly.
- Overhead garage door has quality lock
- Garage and interior doors are locked and closed when not in use.
- Remote garage door opener is customized for your garage door.
- Keys are removed from vehicle while it is in the garage.
- Garage lights can be turned on from inside the house.
- Exterior
- Shrubs are cut below window level so doors and windows are visible from all angles.
- Residence number is visible from the street, at night and from the lane.
- Tree limbs cut above window level.
- Residence number is visible from the street, at night and from the lane.
- All entrances to the house and garage are well lit. Well lit entrances discourage burglary. Motion sensors are particularly effective. Protect light bulbs to prevent breakage or tampering.
- Bicycles, lawn mowers, ladders etc are kept inside.
- You don't leave notes indicating you aren't home or when you will return.
- You know your neighbours and watch out for each other's property and or you belong to the BLOCK WATCH PROGRAM.
- Vacations
- You have stopped all deliveries.
- You have left shades and blinds in their normal positions.
- You have notified your neighbours.
- You have set timers on lights and radio to make the residence look occupied while you are away.
- Someone is taking care of the yard.
- Additional Checks
- You keep most of your cash in the bank.
- You keep a list of all valuable property, credit cards and serial numbers in a safe place.
- Valuable property is engraved with your driver's license number.
- You know who is at your door before opening it and ask for credentials.
- You speak to people through a locked door and always keep the door locked when you are home.
- You acknowledge to suspicious persons you are at home and then call 911.
- You never let anyone inside your home if you are alone or uneasy about them.
- You never hide keys outside your home.
